Preparing our children for a successful school year doesn’t end on the first day of school. We can intentionally love, encourage, pray for, and support them throughout the entire school year.

As another school year begins, preparation involves much more than purchasing supplies, choosing clothes, arranging transportation, and establishing bedtime routines.

As parents, grandparents, guardians, and caregivers, we can begin by keeping God at the center and having a positive conversation with our children about the year ahead.

Pray together. Ask what they’re looking forward to. Ask what they would like prayer for. Talk about routines and why they matter. Let them know you believe in them before they ever bring home the first assignment, test, or report card.

And then keep the encouragement going throughout the school year.

Before school, send them into their day with love, encouragement, and prayer.

During school, consider establishing a simple daily tradition: send some love from home.

It might be:

“I love you!”
“Miss you!”
“Thinking about you!”
“I’m proud of you!”
“I’m praying for you!”
“Can’t wait to see you!”

You can also send a short Scripture or prayer too. For children who enjoy handwritten notes, tuck one somewhere they’ll find it. The method can fit the child and family—the purpose is consistent love and connection.

After school, reconnect. Listen. Ask about their day. Recognize effort, improvement, responsibility, perseverance, and growth.

And if your work schedule means you aren’t physically home when your child leaves for school, arrives home, or goes to bed, connection can still happen through a phone call, text, video call, voice message, Scripture, or prayer and handwritten notes where you always leave them, or play the hide-and-seek note game. As long as the notes are expected and consistent!

Find the rhythm that works for your family and keep God at the center of it.

You can always refer to the timeless blog with practical, positive, Christ-centered ideas throughout the school year.

Because ultimately, we’re preparing our children for much more than assignments and report cards. We’re helping them grow in faith, responsibility, confidence, perseverance, communication, and the knowledge that they are loved and supported.

💛💛 We Must Let Our Children Know We Believe in Them

Children need encouragement before they’ve accomplished anything!

Tell them:

“I believe in you.”

“I’m proud of you.”

“Give this year your best.”

“Ask for help when you need it.”

“I’m looking forward to watching you grow.”

💞 Keeping the Door Open: Helping Our Children Feel Safe, Heard, and Supported Throughout the School Year

💛 Start or restart the conversation.
If school has already begun and the family never had that intentional beginning-of-the-year conversation, it is not too late. Sit down now. Ask how things are going. Ask what feels good and what feels difficult. Remind them, “I love you. I believe in you. You can talk to me. We will work through things together.”

💛 Keep God at the center.
Whether the child has a wonderful day or a difficult one, continue bringing them back to God. Pray with them. Remind them that God is present at school as well as at home. Let them see that faith is not only something we practice on Sunday—it is where the family goes for wisdom, strength, peace, correction, gratitude, and help.

💛 Listen before reacting.
This is a big deal! A teacher may call and say, “Your child did A, B, and C.” That does not mean the first response at home should be yelling, embarrassing the child, cursing at them, or deciding the entire story before hearing them.

We can respect educators and listen to our children.

Our children should always know:

“I may have made a mistake. There may be a consequence. But I can still tell the truth and be heard.”

💛 That open door is especially important when what they need to tell us is uncomfortable, embarrassing, frightening, or something we would rather not hear.

Make home a place where they can come back and talk.
I had an Open-Door Policy in my classroom during my lunch time, and I realized how much children need that. Students were willing to interrupt their own lunch because they knew my door was open. And some of them were coming because they believed they had nobody else they could talk to.

💛 It’s unfortunate that a lot of children consistently have to search outside the home for a safe adult who will listen to them.

Prayerfully, as Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers, we’ll no longer allow busyness to erase connection.

Some children are getting themselves up, getting dressed, leaving the house, returning to an empty house, and handling hours of their day without an adult physically present. Work schedules are real. Financial responsibilities are real. Latchkey situations are real.

So the question is not, “Can every parent be physically available every minute?”

They cannot.

The question is:

“How can I remain intentionally connected even when I cannot physically be there?”

A text.

A note.

A quick call.

A voice message.

A video message.

A predictable check-in.

A question after school that is more meaningful than, “How was school?”

Those things tell the child, “You are still on my mind.”

And social media cannot become the replacement for relationship.
The point is not that everything on social media is bad. The problem comes when social media becomes the primary listener, adviser, comforter, entertainer, and influence because nobody else has made themselves available.

A Special Back-to-School Poem for Children

When morning comes and school begins,
I take a breath and wear a grin.
If something feels a little new,
I know that God will see me through.

I meet the girls, I meet the boys,
We learn and laugh with books and toys.
We count, we color, we sing and share,
And God is with me everywhere.

The ones who love me hug me tight
And tell me, “You’ll be all right.”
Even when they’re not in view,
God stays close in all I do.

My teacher welcomes me with cheer,
And helps me know I’m safe right here.
We read and write, we laugh and learn,
We raise our hands and take our turn.

With every lesson, game, and rule,
I know God stays with me at school.
I can be brave and try what’s new,
Because God’s love is strong and true.

Loving God,

Thank You for loving us and being with us as we go to school.

Help us listen to our teachers, make new friends, and enjoy our school day.

I’m All In

A Back-to-School Poem for Our Children

You need to know, through thick and thin,
When life gets hard, I’m all in.
Not only when your days are bright,
I’ll stand with you when things aren’t right.

I’ll hear your story, let you speak,
And listen when your heart feels weak.
You never have to hide within—
Come talk to me. I’m all in.

I’ll cheer you on and help you grow,
And remind you there is more to know.
A stumble does not mean you’re through;
We’ll learn, reset, and start anew.

I may not have each answer right,
But I won’t leave you in the fight.
We’ll pray together, seek God’s way,

A brand-new year, a brand-new start,
New goals to reach with all your heart.
New halls to walk, new things to learn,
New opportunities at every turn.

Some days will stretch you, that is true,
But challenges can strengthen you.
Don’t let one setback make you quit,
Keep moving forward bit by bit.

Be open to friendships, laugh and share,
But choose with wisdom, choose with care.
Not everyone who comes your way
Should have the power to lead your day.

Be kind, be thoughtful, be yourself,
Don’t trade your values for someone else.
You never have to change who you are
Just to fit in or follow the crowd from afar.

Ask God for wisdom along the way,
Before decisions, pause and pray.
Let Jesus guide the things you do,
Your conversations and choices too.

Stay safe, stay focused, do your best,
And know that growth is not a test
Of whether every day goes right—
Sometimes we grow most through the fight.

Celebrate progress, big or small,
And if you stumble, get back up tall.
One difficult grade, one difficult day
Does not decide your future or way.

So step into this school year strong,
Knowing with Christ you belong.
Learn, grow, laugh, pray, and pursue
