💛 Reflection

What Does It Actually Look Like to Put God First Every Day?

We hear the words “put God first” and “seek God first,” but what does that actually look like in an ordinary day?

It can begin the moment God allows us to open our eyes.

Before the responsibilities of the day begin pulling at us, before we become consumed with our phones, schedules, work, school, family responsibilities, or everything waiting to be done, we can acknowledge the One who gave us another day.

Our Prayer does not have to be long or complicated. We can simply say, “LORD, thank You for waking me up. Thank You for another opportunity to walk through this day with You, for You, and by Your strength. May You guide me today. May You show me how I can serve You today.”

That is one practical way of putting God first.

It does not mean everyone must have the exact same morning routine. Some people may spend time reading the Bible before leaving home. Some may Pray while getting ready. Someone may listen to worship music while preparing breakfast or driving to work. The routine may look different, but the heart behind it is the same: LORD, this day belongs to You, and I want to live it with You.

Then we get up and live our ordinary lives.

We may go to work, school, college, or ministry. We may stay home and care for children or family members. We may be retired. We may have appointments, errands, household responsibilities, or places we need to go. Putting God first does not mean stepping away from everyday life. It means learning to walk through everyday life in relationship with Him.

We can talk with God throughout the day. We can thank Him when something goes well. We can ask for patience when we feel frustrated. We can Pray for someone who comes to mind. We can recognize His provision. We can remember something we read in His Word. We can listen when the Holy Spirit corrects our attitude or directs us to do something differently.

And when decisions arise, we do not have to wait until everything has gone wrong before seeking God. Proverbs 3:6 tells us, “Seek his will in all you do.” Seeking Him becomes part of the relationship we have already been living throughout the day.

Putting God first also changes our perspective about the day itself.

Sometimes we can wake up already expecting the worst. Yesterday was difficult, something painful is happening, we are sick, we are disappointed, or we already know something challenging is waiting for us. But instead of allowing the problem to have first place, we can give God first place.

We can ask, “LORD, how may I live for You today? How may I serve You right where I am?”

Our circumstances may not immediately change, but our perspective can.

Paul and Silas demonstrated this while they were imprisoned. Acts 16 tells us that around midnightthey were praying and singing hymns to God. They did not wait until the prison doors opened before they worshiped. They honored God while they were still in the prison.

We can do the same in our circumstances. Even during difficult seasons, we can continue living with God, for God, and by His strength.

And as our relationship with Him grows, there will be fruit from that relationship. Walking closely with Christ should begin affecting how we speak, how we respond, how we love, how we serve, and how we treat other people. We are not going to live perfectly, but our lives should increasingly reflect the One we are walking with.

Then the day begins to wind down.

Before we lay our heads down at night, we can acknowledge God again. We can thank Him for bringing us through another day. We can talk with Him about what happened, thank Him for the Blessings we noticed, confess where we fell short, Pray for ourselves and others, and place tomorrow into His hands.

And then we begin again when He gives us another day.

This is what putting God first can look like every day.

It is not limiting God to church, a morning devotional, a crisis, or an important decision. It is learning to live our ordinary lives in relationship with Him.

Matthew 6:33 tells us to “seek the Kingdom of God above all else.” We do not seek God first merely because we want Him to give us everything else. We seek Him because He deserves first place.

From the moment God allows us to open our eyes until the moment He allows us to lay our heads down, we can learn to live with Him, for Him, and by Him.

🙏🏼 Today’s Prayer

Precious LORD,

Thank You for the gift of another day and another opportunity to live with You, for You, and by Your strength.

Thank You that we do not have to wait for a crisis or an important decision before coming to You. Thank You that You desire a relationship with us in the ordinary moments of our lives.

May You help us put You first when we wake up in the morning. Before the responsibilities and distractions of the day begin pulling for our attention, may we remember to acknowledge You and thank You.

As we move throughout our day, may You help us remain aware of Your presence. May You guide our steps, direct our decisions, correct us when needed, and show us opportunities to serve You wherever You have placed us.

As we grow closer to You, may the fruit of that relationship become evident in the way we live, speak, love, serve, and treat others.

And when we lay our heads down at night, may we remember to thank You for carrying us through another day.

Thank You, Jesus Christ, for the life we have through You. Thank You, Holy Spirit, for helping us walk with You each day.

May our lives continually reflect that You are first.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

💛 Reflection Question

On any given day and throughout the day, do I demonstrate to God that I’m putting Him first?

💛 Living It Out

Begin each day with the expectation that you are going to live with God, for God, and by His strength. Ask Him to guide you and show you how you can serve Him throughout the day.

At the end of the day, simply ask, “LORD, may You show me where I fell short in putting You first today?” None of us does this perfectly. Allow God to reveal those areas, receive His correction, and continue growing in your relationship with Him.

🍎 Temple Care

Putting God first also affects how we care for what He has entrusted to us, including our bodies.

As you move through your day, pay attention to what your body needs. Drink water, choose nourishing foods when possible, move your body, and allow yourself appropriate rest.

Temple Care does not take God’s place. It is one way we can care for the body He has given us so that we are better prepared to live, serve, and fulfill our responsibilities.

💛 Today’s Proclamation

God has first place in my life.

When He gives me another day, I will begin it with Him.

I will walk through my day with Him, live for Him, and depend upon His strength.

I will seek His will in what I do and look for opportunities to serve Him wherever He has placed me.

💞 Love You All Much!

💖 Have a Blessed, Safe, Wonderful Day, Week, and Life!!!
